Epidural, Subdural Hematoma and Subarachnoid Hemorrhage Following Interlaminar Epidural Injection: A Case Report and Literature Review

Abstract

Epidural injection is a widely used technique in Chronic Pain Units for the treatment of sciatica refractory to medical treatment. Neuroaxial hemorrhages secondary to this technique are uncommon but clinically significant due to the irreversible damage that can result from the lack of early diagnosis and treatment. We present a case of epidural and subdural hematoma with an atypical presentation following an interlaminar epidural injection with local anesthetic and corticosteroids. Additionally, we conduct a review of the literature and the management carried out, emphasizing the importance of clinical assessment and reevaluation, as well as the high index of clinical suspicion required for this condition.
