Abstract
Objective: To describe the level of knowledge and attitudes of patients about pain management in adult patients in different hospital services in high-level institution in Bogotá, Colombia. Materials and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in which 85 nurses from a high complexity hospital in Colombia. Nurses participated voluntarily in emergency, hospitalization, surgery and critical care services. Demographic characteristics, professional experience and academic training were analyzed. The level of knowledge and attitudes about pain management was evaluated through Knowledge and Attitudes Survey Regarding Pain (KASRP) questionnaire in Spanish version. This questionnaire includes 37 questions that are grouped into 4 domains: cancer pain, pain assessment, pharmacology, and substance abuse; and physical dependence. Results: 66 % of the participants were women and the average age was 34.2 ± 7.3 years. 17.6 % have a specialization and 34.1 % have a master’s degree. 52.9 % reported formal training in advanced pain management. On average, the nurses achieved a score of 53 correct responses to the scale. This result is in acceptable range of (50-75 %), showing greater proximity to the limit of poor knowledge. Conclusions: Most of nurses are young professionals with high academic level and clinical experience. However, even though most reported having advanced training in pain management, the results of this study show significant gaps in knowledge and attitudes about pain management. These knowledge and attitudes can be improved through training actions that include problem-based learning method in undergraduate and postgraduate programs and continuous and multidisciplinary training.References
